One hears again and again of “ super fruits ” in advertising . But what is it actually and what is so “great” about it? We have put 5 such super fruits under the microscope for you.

What are super fruits?

The super fruits include cranberry, pomegranate, acerola, acai, aronia, goji and many more.

These are predominantly exotic types of fruit that are above average rich in minerals, vitamins, polyphenols and other plant substances. But also local fruits like the lingonberry belong to the super fruits.

Because of their high concentration of minerals, vitamins and active plant ingredients, they have a strong health-promoting effect in many areas.

All super fruits are also certified to have a high content of antioxidants, which are cell-protecting agents that neutralize free radicals in the body.

Free radicals can damage our cells and arise from normal metabolism, but also from UV radiation, environmental toxins, ozone, in stressful situations, from an unbalanced diet, the use of certain medications and from illnesses.

Too much free radicals leads to an oxidation of protein and fats and consequently to accelerated aging of the cell structures.

How do I eat super fruits?

The active ingredients of the super fruits are often offered in tablet form for expensive money.

However, it has not been scientifically proven whether the substances can be absorbed by the human organism in an isolated form in just as beneficial a way as in the natural form, the fruit itself.

Super fruit juices are also questionable, because these juices are rarely pure and it is not known how many of the original vitamins are in the bottle.

If you make the juice from fresh fruits yourself, or if you eat the fruits raw, this is the best option.

The pomegranate contains a multitude of healthy substances such as polyphenols, especially the punicalagins. These valuable plant ingredients have shown that they can protect the heart, blood vessels, joints and prostate.

Studies of pomegranate juice have shown that it can lower blood pressure and oxidative stress in healthy individuals in the short term. Both are risk factors for heart disease. You can buy pomegranates from us at any time of the year.

Their precious stone-like fruit components decorate fruit salads and muesli. A trick to get the small grains out of the shell: cut the pomegranate crossways in the middle.

Then hold it upside down over a bowl and tap the bowl vigorously with a spoon. The individual cores then simply fall out. As it splatters, hold half the pomegranate as deep as possible in the bowl. A tall mixing vessel is ideal.

Goji berries strengthen the immune system, lower the cholesterol level, promote the ability to concentrate, have anti-inflammatory effects and are celebrated as anti-aging berries.

They are mainly grown in China and traded dried to Europe. In their fresh form, they have a lot of vitamin C – but even then they are still less than fresh, black currants.

Since people in China work a lot with (partly illegal) pesticides, products with goji berries should only be bought from organic farming.

Or the best thing is to take fresh currants straight away – they have more vitamin C than dried goji berries and also have a wide range of valuable secondary plant substances.

Cranberries are famous for their strong defenses and are especially recommended as a preventative against urinary tract infections. Certain ingredients in cranberries probably prevent bacteria from staying in the urinary tract and thus causing an infection.

The cranberry also contains a high concentration of antioxidants. Cranberries grow in North America and are related to our native lingonberries.

We have used cranberries to prevent urinary tract infections for generations . So why buy expensive imported fruits instead of eating local fruits?

In summer you can find the red berries on bog meadows, in heathland and some mountain meadows. Delicious and so healthy!

Noni

The noni fruit is also called “Indian mulberry” and is mainly used in Australia as a “beauty fruit ”. A glass of juice a day supposedly activates your metabolism and protects against wrinkles.

But it shouldn’t be more than that, because noni juice probably contains questionable ingredients. They are anthraquinone derivatives known to be powerful laxatives, but they are also used in the dye industry.

The money for expensive noni juice can be better invested in a good day cream with a sun protection factor – this is more effective (and cheaper) protection against wrinkles.

You can also use local fruits: blueberries or sour cherries contain even more antioxidants – and blueberries even contain more magnesium than acai berries.
